Girlstart Offers Launchpad for Girls Interested in Science

Working through the social distancing challenges of COVID-19, Girlstart is committed to providing girls across the U.S. with a virtual learning opportunity. And HMS will be with them all the way.

Girlstart is a nonprofit committed to increasing girls’ interest and engagement in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) through innovative programs. These programs empower young girls to take on tomorrow’s greatest challenges.

According the National Association of Manufacturers and Deloitte, the U.S. will have to fill 3.5 million STEM jobs by 2025. Right now, two million of these jobs would go unfilled due to lack of candidates. Girlstart is committed to filling this pipeline, and, as a technology company, HMS is honored to play a part.

To support Girlstart’s virtual summer camp, HMS donated $20,000, enabling 233 girls to participate at no cost to their families.

Summer camp participants received science kits that included an Ozobot, a miniature computer resembling Star Wars' R2-D2, which can be programmed to do numerous tasks. These Ozobots introduce girls to computer programming through fun projects and experiments.
