What is estate recovery? Estate recovery is a requirement of the federal government for every Medicaid program. The assets in the estate, or in some states any assets, of deceased Medicaid members may be recoverable by the state Medicaid program and if recoverable, the assets are paid into the Medicaid program in an amount equal to costs paid for care of the Medicaid member. Estate recovery adds to the funding to support the care of current Medicaid members.
